From our drawings, we machined up the components for the new gate in Accoya. This timbers’ rot resistance and dimensional stability means it’ll provide many years of tough outdoor service, with the added benefit of being about half the weight of the oak and elm original.

For the four raised panels, we used a sheet version of acetylated pine called Tricoya. Being a sheet, it’ll have greater longevity than the alternatives as it allows us to move the joinery into less weather-prone areas of the gate.
The weight reduction also makes for an easier life for the “red-rubber” brick pillar that’ll support the hinge side. In Part 1, note the carvings in the brickwork and how fine those pencil joints are!

After moving the gate away from the dust of the workshop (via a van’s roof rack) it got 3 coats of good quality paint before having the hinges fitted and a final coat of paint.

Now we just needed to get it down the M40 safely……
