<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The wooden bay window of this Victorian Semi originally had a planted window sill extension. Combined with the masonry sill underneath, the whole thing looked a bit busy so the builder was asked to remove the wooden sill extension and fill the groove with filler.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1356" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_165237-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The line of the groove can be seen in the first few photos. Over the years, the filler had cracked and allowed rain into the timber, rotting the remaining sill.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1354" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240508_163845-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The customer was very keen to stick with timber windows to maintain the character of this lovely period family home. Joinery Shop were asked to repair the sill and any rotten sashes while we were there.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1355" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-225x300.jpg 225w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_110954-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We set about removing the sashes to assess the rot to the frame of the bay. We machined away rotten areas that we found all along the sill, mullions and posts. The bay had draft proofing grooves machined into it, so we matched those with the originals in the new Accoya sill.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1357" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-225x300.jpg 225w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240703_144456-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1360" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-scaled-1696x1272.jpg 1696w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-scaled-848x636.jpg 848w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-scaled-520x390.jpg 520w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20240701_154852-scaled-260x195.jpg 260w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We then machined the bottom of the posts back to good wood before joining in Accoya to rot-proof and make good the old grooves in the corners. Finally, we carried out A repairs to the front 4 sashes which had been patched with filler.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The use of properly jointed Accoya for the bottom rails, stiles and beading means the sashes are now even better than new with a 50 year rot resistance in the key areas that are most susceptible to the weather! A really satisfying repair which restores the curb appeal of this home for decades to come.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This unusual square and squinted bay window presented 2 challenges for us. The first was the condition of the existing sashes. The second was that the bay itself had subsided in the past by up to 3 inches, causing the sashes to become pinched and deformed under the bay’s weight.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1348" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-848x636.jpg 848w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-520x390.jpg 520w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003-260x195.jpg 260w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0003.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now that the subsidence had stabilised, we decided to approach the problem by making new pressure treated pine sashes. Pressure treatment gives the bare wood 30 years resistance to rot and a 10 year-life paint system ensures the wood won’t become bare any time soon. We took the opportunity to fit super-insulating, argon filled double glazed units in the new sashes to keep heating bills down as well as road noise.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1349" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0000.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To overcome the problems caused by the subsidence in the bay, the sashes were made with extra thick top and bottom rails. It was then possible to hang the sashes on the original 120 year old hinges and “Shoot in” each sash to exactly fit the subsided frame. By doing this, we able to restore the windows to fully functioning without resorting to an extremely costly and disruptive bay window replacement!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1350" srcset="https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001-300x225.jpg 300w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001-768x576.jpg 768w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://joinery-shop.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG-20240617-WA0001.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
