The Joinery Shop repairs French Door in Marlow where others have failed. This fixed end panel on a set of French doors had been suffering for a little while. The rotten wood had been filled very neatly and repainted by a decorator, but that hadn’t solved the problem as rain water was still making its way behind the bottom bead, through the paint and into the hardwood bottom rail of the panel. As the panel was fixed to the brickwork, we had to perform an in situ A, B, C repair on the bottom rail employing ply guides to ensure perfect margins as we machined the rotten timber away. In the second photo you can see an enormous amount of white filler with damp black timber around it and the white powdery mould that was thriving inside the wet frame. We’re just over 1” deep into the bottom rail at this stage so the rot had well and truly set in! These doors were seriously big and chunky, so we needed to make up planks in Accoya of the correct size before meticulously scribing them to fit. Judicious application of tea ensures the joiner is capable of the greatest accuracy. We made up an exact replacement of the existing beading using the remaining Accoya (we never waste any of this amazing material) and finished with 2 coats of micro porous long life primer before deploying our secret weapon in the fight against water ingress on timber window frames…no really, it’s a SECRET.

Replacement Sash near Beaconsfield

This lower casement sash, at first glance appeared to have a relatively small area of rot at the bottom. However, on closer inspection an ant infestation had attacked the timber, eating it from the inside-out. It was only the paint that had stopped the ants from progressing into the frame and top sash. The original design of the old sash was copied precisely. This included a rebate at the top to marry with the top sash and glazing with individual panes to maintain the existing sightlines. The glazing itself is the latest Argan gas filled, energy saving glass. Whilst we set to work carefully cleaning and preparing the frame with a few razor sharp chisels, Henry the Hoover provided the ants with somewhere new to live. Before final fitting, a last inspection of the paintwork ensured no more ants would be finding their way through cracks in the perfectly applied 10 year life paint. All that remained to be done was to check the margins were exactly the same all around and fit the sash so it looked as though it had always been there!

Full sill replacement in Maidenhead

This was a 1960’s mortise and tenoned Magnet off the shelf window that had some how made its way in the toilet room of a listed building in Maidenhead in the 1960’s. The sill was completely rotten and although there was a good argument for a new window that resembled something original the customer preferred to have the sill replaced.We installed a completely new sill using Accoya wood and re-mortising the sill into the existing tenons.Accoya is guaranteed to lasted 50 years minimum .

Porch repair Maidenhead

This 1920’s house needed the whole lower porch timbers replaced and re-jointed back using Accoya wood.The doors needed to be taken off and repaired separately while the posts were jointed using a triple lap lengthening joint .

New Spiral Balances in Beaconsfield

These 20 year old sliding sash windows lifted not using weights but using springs instead.This method was introduced in 1920’s and was very popular in the 1995’s – 2005’s on new builds .Unfortunately the spiral balances in those days were a bit basic and don’t last more than 20 years.All the windows need to be fully measured and new calculations made for new next generation balances to replace then.

Rotten French Door Maidenhead

This 20 year old french door became a victim of a blocked gutter resulting in the hardwood door quickly becoming very rotten. We needed to give the customers a whole new bottom rail which was re- mortise and tenoned back in Accoya wood including a new bottom glass beading to match the existing.The whole job took exactly 8 hours to complete.

New window sill in Maidenhead

This triple casement Georgian window sashes were in an OK condition and only needed basic “A” repairs done to them to get them looking new again but the sill needed a full replacement in Accoya wood. This was a A,B,C biscuit joint D method was took approx.6 hours to complete and was repeated 4 more times on the other rotten windows at the property.

This was a very rotten triple casement window in Maidenhead ,but because it was a listed building the sashes had to be copied like for like reproducing exactly the same mouldings and dimensions all the way even matching the internal margins so that Kirkpatrick furniture could be fitted the same as all the other windows in the property.

Wooden sill repair in Amersham

This is a wooden window from a grade 2 listed building in Amersham dating back to 1775 .The sill wasn’t rotten enough to replace so we took the unusual method of patch repairing in Accoya. For this method the rot is routed out using templating and preservative poured into the troughs then left for a week to soak in and dry out before new pieces of Accoya wood are then glued into the space.Yorkshire sliders vary depending on their age this one had 3 x protruding 3/4 inch oak pegs coming out of the sill to stop the sash falling out when its opened.The best method which came later is a 1/2 inch hardwood horizontal parting bead that runs inside a grooved bottom rail.
